Job Description

EHS Manager

The core responsibilities for this position include occupational health and safety, but the successful candidate will have a broad background in multiple EHS areas including the core responsibilities and process safety and environmental management systems.  The EHS manager will review, evaluate, and analyze work environments, and design programs and procedures to control injury or health concerns caused by chemical, physical, biological or ergonomic factors. The candidate will conduct inspections and enforce adherence to laws and regulations governing the health and safety of Company employees.

The EHS manager will support and drive implementation and maintenance of the Company’s EHS Global Management system to ensure compliance with local, State and Federal requirements.  In addition, the candidate will coordinate strategies aimed at promoting sound EHS principles & practices, and develop and implement strategies that provide continuous improvement of the environmental, health and safety programs.

The EHS manager’s responsibilities will involve different working environments including, but not limited to, manufacturing plants, field construction sites, research and development laboratories, and offices.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Provide EHS support to the Roofing Division.
  • Provide support to EHS Global Management System implementation efforts (Dakota Productivity Suite).
  • Provide broad support to ISO 14001 / OHSAS 18001 registration efforts.
  • Identify and evaluate hazardous conditions and practices in the workplace.  This will include tasks such as development of Job Safety Analysis (JSA), standard work procedures (SWP), facilitation and / or review of Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) and work safety permits.
  • Develop controls for identified hazards. Coordinate the implementation of controls from results of hazard analysis. Measure and evaluate the effectiveness of the hazard control system, policies, and procedures and recommend changes that reflect improved opportunities to eliminate work place accidents and injuries.
  • Lead or participate in accident/incident investigations, near misses, and participate in the development of corrective action plans and their implementation using root cause analysis.
  • Conduct surveys to identify and evaluate occupational health, safety and environmental conditions.
  • Conduct and coordinate on-site inspections to audit physical conditions and safe work practices.
  • Provide advice and counsel concerning all city, state, and federal compliance regulations.
  • Direct or assist in the development of specialized education and training materials. Conduct specialized safety and environmental training programs to communicate hazard control information.
  • Assist in new employee occupational health, safety and environmental orientation. Compile, analyze, interpret and report accident, loss, and exposure statistical data; prepare comprehensive recommendations for corrective action to eliminate or minimize potential hazards. Review injury and property damage reports.
  • Participate in developing and implementing the EHS Audit process.
  • Interface with plant management, contractors, consultants and regulatory authorities.
  • Support plant Emergency Preparedness and Response Planning.

Skills, Qualifications, Experience, Special Physical Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree – technical field appropriate to chemical plant operations.
  • Experience in the EHS field, preferably in the chemical or a related industry.
  • Proven track record in successful implementation of EHS initiatives. 5+ yrs. experience in implementation and/or development of industrial safety and other EHS programs.
  • Experience in EHS management systems a must.
  • Experience in using and implementing the Dakota Performance Suite a plus.
  • Experience in implementing ISO 14001 / OSHAS 18001 a plus.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA regulatory requirements, in particular development and experience with Lockout/Tagout, Confined Space Entry, Hot Work, Flammable and Combustible liquids operations, and Process Safety Management including Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) facilitation.
  • Computer proficiency, good communication skills, Project Management experience required.
  • Knowledge and experience in environmental regulatory requirements, e.g. RCRA waste management, groundwater and soil contamination and remediation is a plus.
  • Excellent communication skills a must.
  • Ability to travel on short notice.
  • CSP and / or CHMM a plus.
