Job Description

The Labor Relations Specialist will be responsible for assisting the Director, Roofing Manufacturing with the management of plant-wide employee and labor relations issues and related projects. Individual will work in conjunction with Human Resources and provide dedicated on-site support to Plant Management.  Will lead all HR related activities including, but not limited to union negotiations, dispute resolution, training, communications, compliance, project management and serve as point person for HR administration at the local level.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Contract Administration

  • Schedules and attends union/management meetings and is responsible for the accurate documentation and distribution of all updates and notes
  • Organizes proposals, contract revisions, etc. in preparation of contract negotiations
  • Coordinates printing, revising, formatting, proofreading and distribution of new bargaining agreements
  • Provides administrative support to the lead negotiator during contract negotiations
  • Manages the tracking of all tentative agreements during contract negotiations
  • Coordinating and assist in UAW contract negotiations, implementation and ongoing administration of the Collective Bargaining Agreement
  • Advises management on contracts, worker grievances, and disciplinary procedures and makes recommendations on where improvement or change is needed
  • Meets with union representatives as necessary

Dispute Resolution and Employee Relations

  • Serves as initial point of contact for matters related to employee and labor relations
  • Assists in day-to-day grievance processing that requires researching issues, past practices, contract provisions, and critical issues while simultaneously monitoring and tracking grievance activities to ensure timeliness and compliance with labor agreements. Investigates validity of labor grievances.
  • Assists with the timely processing and handling of all other general inquiries, complaints (EEOC, network calls, etc.) and issues while ensuring correct interpretation and application of the collective bargaining agreement, HR and Plant policies
  • Conducts research and investigations, documents all relevant information, and reports findings
  • Analyzes investigative findings and recommends appropriate responsive action based on accurate interpretation of all relative policies, procedures and labor agreements
  • Assists Plant Manager with the preparation and review of all disciplinary documentation and creation of Performance Improvement Plans or other actions.

HR Administration

  • Serves as point of contact for local HR questions
  • Prepares and presents required and special reports as needed by Plant or HR Management
  • Assists with the development, proposal and facilitation of opportunities for ongoing education regarding Employee and Labor Relations best practices
  • Identifies, formulates and recommends proactive initiatives in all areas of employee and labor relations to both create efficiencies, and to identify and resolve potential issues before they arise
  • Coordinates hourly recruiting, interviewing and onboarding activities for temporary and regular hires as required and in conjunction with Corporate recruiters
  • Supports and helps promote all Health and Safety activities as required in conjunction with EHS Manager
  • Ensures all compliance and HR policies and notices are posted and communicated
  • Ensure compliance and helps deliver all plant and/or corporate training requirements
  • Works with HR on communications such as open enrollment, benefit changes, and all things related to communicating corporate messages
  • Prepares and conducts training as required to management and/or plant employees
  • Helps recommend award and recognition programs (approved by HR)
  • Provides supports to other DC and/or manufacturing locations (future)

Other Plant Management Support

  • Participates in meetings between management and labor
  • Drafts proposals and rules or regulations when necessary
  • Ensures that human resources policies are consistent with union agreements
  • Interprets formal communications between management and labor
  • Leads and tracks and maintains information on skills/training matrix
  • Trains management on labor relations
  • Prepares and reviews all disciplinary documentation to ensure compliance with contract and HR policy
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Plant Manager and/or Human Resources Management team

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or a related field; Significant related experience may substitute for education

Experience

  • Minimum of five years of demonstrated employee and/or labor relations experience in a union environment
  • Demonstrated experience effectively making recommendations and resolving issues that could have major implications to plant operations
  • Demonstrated effectiveness with problem-solving methods in adaptive and/or challenging situations
  • Prior experience managing projects, delivering training, and resolving employee relation issues
  • Demonstrated track record with successful navigation through change management with focus on growth and continual improvement.

  • Possess comprehensive background in Human Resources and understanding of concepts and practices that can be used in complex or difficult situations as it pertains to plant operations
  • Willingness and ability to take initiative, prioritize and perform proactively
