RPM Manager Trainee - Environmental, Health & Safety

The Manager Trainee - Environmental, Health, & Safety (EHS) will be responsible for assisting with the development, communication, implementation, monitoring, and auditing of safety and environmental programs within RPM operating companies in order to protect the organization’s most important assets: its Employees, Brands, Reputation, Equipment, and Property.  The duration of this position will be approximately 2 years.  At the end of this trainee assignment, there may be potential employment opportunities with a subsidiary company of RPM.

RPM International Inc. owns subsidiaries that manufacture and market high-performance coatings, sealants and specialty chemicals, primarily for maintenance and improvement applications.  RPM employs approximately 13,000 people worldwide and operates 116 manufacturing facilities in 26 countries. Its products are sold in approximately 170 countries and territories.


•         Work closely with the Vice President, EHS of RPM International to understand fundamental aspects of the EHS programs present at each of the operating companies and how these programs can assist to drive a positive safety and environmental culture, while improving manufacturing efficiencies and quality.

•         Serve as a resource to Operating Company Plant Managers and Manufacturing Supervisors (Plant Leadership) regarding policies, standards and best practices pertaining to Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental, Hazardous Materials Management and Product Stewardship Programs. Work closely with the Vice President, EHS, and Plant Leadership in the areas of workplace injury investigations, and back-to-work programs.

•         Identify and correct non-compliant processes through participation in formal audits, and make recommendations in order to resolve compliance issues and mitigate property and casualty risks/liability.  Ensure that the Vice President, EHS and Plant Leadership are aware of any discrepancies or issues related to EHS procedures and protocols and verify that the appropriate programs are in place to address any issues.

•         Assist Vice President, EHS with management of the following Corporate Program Initiatives; Job Safety Analysis (JSA), Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), Property Risk, Casualty Risk, Energy Management, and Security.  Performs data collection assessment and metrics evaluations.

•         Track and provide updates on global regulatory legislation to affected companies and management.

•         Perform other duties as assigned by the Vice President, EHS.


•         Bachelor degree in Engineering or Environmental Science, or related degree (Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, or Safety Sciences).

•         Broad understanding of regulatory compliance requirements, risk management and mitigation programs in multiple (particularly North American) jurisdictions.

•         Formal training in the area of occupational health and safety, plus knowledge of Federal and State Environmental and Safety regulations (RCRA, CAA, CWA, PSM, SWP3, OSHA, DOT) is strongly preferred.

•         Must have ability and willingness for extensive domestic and international travel.

•         Exposure to quality systems, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 18001 a plus

•         Experience in paint and coatings or related chemical industry a plus.

•         Knowledge of continuous process disciplines, such as Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing a plus.


•         Ability to inspire others to commit to and achieve EHS program goals and performance measures in a production environment with varying levels of literacy and educational background.

•         Ability to develop a business case for new program development / program modification

•         Ability to manage program administration requirements across multiple, disparate (production, distribution, R&D, sales and marketing) divisions.

•         Ability to establish relationships with all levels of company management, and to leverage that relationship to address open EHS actions needed.
